感謝我叔叔送來 The New Yorker 75th Anniversary Cartoon Collection ，這兩天一邊喝着 利賓納一邊翻看，實在是一本精彩的 漫畫/插圖集 。

想不起自己從甚麼時候開始為插圖着迷，且收集起各式書本和資料來。然而因為summer course 的關係，我發現插圖除了有悅目、趣味這些「功能」以外，原來也可非常實用── 「科學(性質的)插圖」。
我不把這類插圖(illustration)歸納為簡圖/圖解(diagram)是因為它們擁有藝術加工成份在內，比一般平板直述的解說圖要精緻巧妙得多。我選了Andreas Vesalius 兩幅很有名的人體解剖圖作例子，來自他1543年的著作《 De Humani Corporis Fabrica 》。我尤其喜歡第二幅，一個骷髏人在托腮沉思，伸手撫摸另一個骷髏頭── 留意骷髏人站立的地方、它若有若無的「表情」，實在為一幅本可以是沉悶甚至恐怖的骨骼結構圖作了與別不同的詮釋。
但科學插圖遠不止在人體結構這一類目裡。古代人把他們的想像力、創作力融合到實際觀察當中，得出來的結果很是令人驚歎。

這是哲學家Aristotle (亞里士多德)在De Caelo 所畫的，唔，可以稱作是「宇宙體系圖」吧(我搜到太多不同的翻譯名稱，無從取捨，索性自己編一個算了)，包含了星座、星球、運行軌道等。且不探討他的理論該如何評價 ，只是這幅圖就夠漂亮可觀了。說起來古埃及人和希伯來人對世界(world)、宇宙(heaven/ universe)的看法都是很有趣的；古埃及人相信世界是以天神Nut和地神Geb所代表的，而希伯來人則認為星空是被水所環繞，而地球(earth)本身是一幅以柱子支撑、被水和海洋包圍的平面，再往下的Sheol，就是所謂的地獄了。

前些日子逛到一些關於Industrial Art 的網站和weblog，industrial design ? designboom ! 、IDFuel ，但覺得最好看的是Industrial Art Gallery ，製作者Sean M. Burke 的前言 有一句我非常同意：
And this Engineering and Descriptive Geometry was full of example plans and diagrams that were as carefully composed as a still-life painting or a Neo-Classical fresco. The surprising thing about these drawings is that they were gratuitous ─ they just did not need to be that nice ...
描繪得仔細還可以理解，畫得如此讓人愉悅歡喜、愛不釋手就真是，真是──我都不知說啥好了。那些用線條組成的光影、質感，物件的比例、位置安排、整體構圖，全都可稱得上是藝術──也許是一門沒被廣泛注意到的藝術。
我用了三天時間到處找這類科學插圖，但現在說來說去只懂得膚淺地讚好，沒一點深刻的評論；大概是自知缺乏繪畫天份，遇上人家的好作品就容易愣在那裡，光顧着流口水而別的甚麼都來不及想了。
